Managing everyday life: Self-management strategies people use to live well with neurological conditions

This paper uses the Taxonomy of Everyday Self-management Strategies (TEDSS) to provide insight and understanding into complex interdependent self-management strategies people with neurological conditions use manage everyday life. As part a national Canadian study, structured telephone interviews were conducted monthly for eleven months, 117 living one or more conditions. Answers five open-ended questions analyzed using qualitative content analysis. A total 7236 statements analyzed. Findings are presented in two overarching patterns: 1) pervades all aspects life, 2) is chain decisions behaviours. Participants emphasized management daily activities social relationships as important maintaining meaning their lives. Managing life condition includes wide range diverse that often interact complement each other. Some need intentionally every aspect For conditions, there health providers systems go beyond standard advice self-management. support best tailored individual, context realities illness trajectory.
